Soda – These sugary, calorie filled liquids are one of the worst products you can put in your body, and the damage start with your mouth. Sugar is known for being one of the biggest contributors to tooth decay. When the sugar mixes with the bacteria in your mouth they produce acids that eat away and dissolve your teeth. Dark sodas such as Coke, Pepsi, and Root Beer can also cause dark stains in the tooth’s enamel.
Red wine – It is said that a glass of wine a day is healthy, but the opposite is true when it comes to your pearly whites. Red wine loves to leave hard to remove stains on your teeth and if you drink it often, it can just build up and cause your smile to become dull. If you are going to drink red wine, try to use a straw so it doesn’t touch your teeth.
Coffee and tea – Coffee is known to leave the worst stains on teeth, but that’s not all it does. There is also a high level of acid in coffee which can cause tooth decay. Both coffee and tea are often loaded with milk and sugar to make them taste better, but that just adds to the negative effects they have on your teeth. A straw is the best way to get your caffeine kick while still maintaining a white smile.
Sports drinks and juice – Both these products are packed with sugar and acid. Together they can quickly lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. Children that drink sugary juices often can develop cavities before they even lose their baby teeth. It is best to limit consumption of both sports drinks and juices for children and adults.
Switch to Water
It is ok to indulge in these drinks occasionally or take steps to keep them from staying in your mouth too long by using straws, but water is the best replacement for these liquids. Water stimulates the flow of saliva to help dilute the sugar you consume.
