Nothing beats the convenience of getting a dental crown fitted, fabricated, and placed—all in the same appointment. But this also leaves people wondering if they are getting the same quality as a traditional crown with one that is created in just one dental appointment. It may come as a surprise to learn that convenience is really the only difference between the two types of crowns.
How Traditional Crowns Work
With a traditional dental crown, you made one appointment to see the dentist to get your tooth prepared to receive a crown. A mold is taken of the prepared tooth, then sent off to the lab where your crown would be made. In the meantime, you would be fitted with a temporary dental crown while you waited a couple weeks for your crown to be ready.
How Same-Day Crowns Work
With a same-day crown, your tooth is prepared, but instead of a goopy impression being taken, a sophisticated, state-of-the-art CAD/CAM machine precisely measures the tooth to be crowned. These measurements are sent to the fabrication machine so a custom crown can be carved from a block of ceramic. This material is the same quality and material of a traditional drown. Soon your new crown will be placed—all within just a couple of hours.
If you have more questions about same-day crowns, be sure to contact our Bangor, ME practice, Maine Family Dental.
In the past, having a crown placed could turn into a lengthy process extended over multiple visits to your dentist. If you need a crown placed for the first time or a replacement crown, we know that you don't want to wait. Fortunately, we offer CEREC same-day crowns to make the process of getting a crown as fast and efficient as possible!
How do CEREC crowns work?
During your visit, your Maine Family Dental Practice dentist will first prepare your tooth for a crown. This includes removing all signs of decay and gently shaping the tooth. This process does not require a messy, uncomfortable impression of your tooth. Instead, special dental material is applied to your tooth, and a digital image is taken of its contours. This image is sent to a computer screen, where your dentist uses the latest software to design your new crown. The "blueprint" for the design is sent to the CEREC milling machine, and your new crown will be created in about twenty minutes!

There are many different ways to improve the appearance of your smile. Ultimately, the best choice for you should be determined based on the current state of your smile and your aesthetic goals for the future.
Veneers or Crowns
For instance, veneers are so effective at improving the appearance of inconsistencies and flaws in teeth, that many people find them well worth the cost. Others may choose cosmetic crowns, depending on their preference.
One of the most affordable ways to enhance your smile is through professional teeth whitening treatments. Unlike take-home kits that you buy at the drugstore, professional whitening services are customized specifically for you.
Professional whitening can have a very dramatic effect on the appearance of your smile. White teeth are associated with health and youthfulness, so whitening can give you a younger, healthier appearance. Professional whitening is known for being much more effective than drug store kits, and can actually whiten your teeth several shades in only one visit. Whitening done by your dentist is so powerful that it may be able to banish stains that over-the-counter treatments can't.
The effects of your whitening treatment are fast and long-lasting. Ask about how professional whitening may be able to improve your appearance for your upcoming event. Contact our office today!
